First Car Rental introduces GPS
September 06 2008 08:22
Car rental company, Rent A Car, which formerly represented National Alamo Car Rental in Mauritius, has joined the First Car Rental brand and network as from this week.
Based in South Africa, First Car Rental is one of the fastest growing car rental brand present on three continents and is today considered to be one of the trendiest names in the car rental business.
The advent of this new brand in the Mauritian market concurs with the introduction of innovative services. As such it becomes the first car rental company to offer GPS (Global Positioning system) navigation system on a wide selection of vehicles.
“We believe that renting a car should not be limited to the simple process of rental. Customer satisfaction remains our top priority. Road maps are outdated; we must use technology. The GPS navigation system will allow customers to move around with peace of mind,” according to Saffid Toorbuth, general manager of the company.
First Car Rental’s fleet has been bolstered with models that were traditionally meant for private use as the Class B Mercedes, the Peugeot 307 convertible, the Mitsubishi L200 (4x2), the Chrysler 300C or even the Class E Mercedes.
Further, First Car Rental is the only car rental company to offer “Self-Drive” on these top-of the-range vehicles. Additional services offered are:
First Car Rental is represented by a counter at Plaisance airport and in main hotels of the island.
Rent-A Car is a Mauritius-based car rental company which is part of the Leisure and Tourism Division of the British American Investment Group.

GDS players venture into car rentals and cruises
February 21 2007 03:42
Even as the travel market in India grows rapidly, the Global Distribution System (GDS) players are charting new paths. GDS players, the companies which enable global ticketing like Galileo, Amadeus and Abacus, are venturing into areas beyond airline ticketing. The new service verticals they have added include hotel bookings, car rentals and cruises. Currently, the overall GDS industry is worth more than $350 million, out of which the non-air segment is about $7 million.
The non-air segment includes hotels (chains, representation companies, and independent hotel companies), ground & maritime transport (car rental companies, railway companies, ferry lines, cruise lines and insurance companies) and tour operators (specialty, mass-market and vertically-integrated tour operators). According to industry reports, the non-air segment has shown a cumulative growth of over 114% in the last two years and is expected to jump to 5% of the total GDS revenue by 2010, up from 2% at present.
With the zero commission on air tickets (sold by travel agents) issue looming on the horizon, the non-air content would be an area where travel agents will seek to get healthy margins from. “With rapid expansion of non-air elements, this segment is gaining prominence among the GDS players,” said Rahul Joshi, head pre sales, Travelport, a GDS provider.
Although, according to industry players these alternate verticals accounts for around 2% of the overall GDS market, yet it is growing at a steady pace. Galileo, the second largest GDS player in India with around 40% market share, expects to register around 18 million non-air transactions by the end of 2008.
“The non-air business through the GDS has grown over the years specially the hotels and the travel insurance segments,” said Abacus assistant manager, Arijit Bhakta. Abacus accounts for 9% share in the overall GDS market. Abacus' GDS inventory hotels include Mariott, Hyatt, Taj Welcome Group, Best Western, Oberoi hotels and Holiday Inn. The company also allows car rentals through entities like Hertz, Avis and Europcar.
“With about 50% market share in India, Amadeus has a database of over 500 airlines, 300 hotel chains (representing more than 53,000 hotel properties), 48 car rental companies (serving 24,000 locations) and other travel providers such as ferry, rail, cruise, insurance and tour operators. It also helps provide IT solutions like inventory management, revenue management, departure control, e-ticket servers etc to the industry and these are charged on a turnkey basis,” said Ankur Bhatia, managing director Amadeus.
They also provide custom desktop solutions that enable travel agencies to customise their own travel consultant desktop by integrating GDS content with local travel content (for instance they can include low cost carriers and local hotels.) “The reason why non-air product bookings have maintained a low profile till now is because the room rates are quoted in dollars and hardly any budget hotels are included in the inventory. This renders the middle class travelers alienated, while the chunk of travel revenue is sourced from this segment,” said Galileo head business solutions, Suresh Baskaran.
To spur demand for online bookings of hotels, the company has started quoting price in rupees. Galileo expects to add more than 2,500 Indian hotels on the GDS platform by the year-end. This would include stand-alone hotels as well as chain of budget and medium star properties. The company is also considering providing commission for travel agents. Hotel bookings through Internet, sourced from consumer online transactions on third-party websites powered by the GDS and Online Distribution Database (ODD), showed a gain of 9.2% compared to last year.
According to TravelCLICK, the global provider of interactive distribution solutions hotels, in 2008 the overall electronic channels market or online booking of hotels will grow approximately 6% to reach $33 billion in revenue.
Travel and tourism sector is experiencing a boom every year owing to raised living standards and rising disposable incomes. Expected to reach $6 billion by 2010, the online travel industry in India is attracting a number of national and international players. Not surprisingly, by diversifying into areas GDS players will be able take a bigger bite of the travellers’ budget, even as they make things convenient for the latter by enabling one-stop booking.
